Philanthropy derives from Ancient Greek, meaning "to love people". Philanthropy is the act of donating money, goods, services, time and/or effort to support a socially beneficial cause, with a defined objective and with no financial or material reward to the donor. In a more general sense, philanthropy may encompass any altruistic activity intended to promote good or improve human quality of life. One who practices philanthropy may be called a philanthropist. Although such individuals are often rich, people may perform philanthropic acts without possessing great wealth.

Philanthropy is a major source of income for fine arts and performing arts, religious, and humanitarian causes, as well as educational institutions (see patronage).

During the past few years, some high profile examples of philanthropy include Irish rock singer Bono's campaign to cancel Third World debt to developed nations; the Gates Foundation's massive resources and ambitions, such as its campaigns to eradicate malaria and river blindness; and billionaire investor and Berkshire Hathaway Chairman Warren Buffett's donation in 2006 of $31 billion to the Gates Foundation....

Philanthropy is facilitated by development professionals and fundraisers. Donor relations and stewardship professionals support the development profession by recognizing and thanking donors in a fashion that will cultivate future giving to nonprofit organizations. The Association of Donor Relations Professionals (ADRP) is the first community of stewardship and donor relations professionals in the United States and Canada.

How does philanthropy help the economy?
Q. I know that charity is socially good, but how is it economically good (and is it)? I'm just interested in other people's opinions.
Asked by eckoin - Sat Mar 7 12:04:08 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The main purpose of philanthropy is to help people. And if it helps the economy at the same time, then so be it. For this reason not all philanthropy helps the economy equally well. A good example of philanthropy that helps the economy is education prizes and grants from private individuals or companies for gifted students. Another type of philanthropy that might not help the economy as much are religious donations for missionary work to convert people from one religion to another.

Where can one find dental philanthropy?
Q. I have a coworker that went through some very scary years as a meth addict. He has been clean for over four years. He cleaned up and got a job when his little boy was born. He is such a wonderful father, and a hard worker. His problem. After the son was born, his wife left him for another addict. He is a single father, and does not date, because his teeth have gone so bad from the drug abuse, he fears no one would have him. He does not earn much (approx. $8.00/hr) and does not have dental insurance. Does anyone know how to go about getting him some help? His teeth are causing health issues and he wants to look better so his son will not be embarrassed by him.

A. You might try to contact your state medical and dental school. I heard that sometimes the dental students will do work for free, and I'm sure no one would look down on him. It might be better if you made the calls for your friend, who might get easily discouraged if he doesn't get positive results immediately.

Is there a relationship between education and philanthropy?
Q. I want to establish a university for the rural poor of Africa who cannot afford the fees in Kenya's public and private universities. Will my endeavour be the only one of its kind in the 20th and 21st Century Africa?
Asked by Chrisman Letters - Fri Aug 8 19:26:32 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No to your title question. As for your proposition, why don't you check out some in-country (Kenyan) non-profits and pick one or a few of them to help you set up some scholarships. It takes behemoths like Oprah and an Oprah-enamored South African government to start a real school anywhere in Africa, and likely much more to establish a university..
