Etymology

From Late Latin philanthropia, from Ancient Greek. The prefixe phil- comes from ο φίλος ("ho philos") - the friend from the verb φίλω ("philo") which means to like oρ to love. -anthropy comes from the noun ανθρώπος ("anthropos") the man, the human.
